2030 Climate and Energy Framework: How does energy efficiency fit into it?

The European Council’s conclusions pave the way for a series of legislative procedures that will need to be adopted by Member States as a result of this agreement. The core of the new climate and energy regulation will be represented by the the efforts made to meet the following three objectives (compared to 1990):

· A binding EU target of at least 40% reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 compared to 1990
· A binding (at EU level) target of at least 27% of the share of renewable energy consumed in the EU in 2030
· A non-binding target of at least 27% (at EU level) for improving energy efficiency by 2030 (compared to projections of future energy consumption based on the current criteria)

“Best Practice” section now online

Users of the SPiCE³ Platform will now have easy access to a large number of “Best Practice” (BP) documents that are available in the countries participating in the SPiCE³ Project.

There are many reports and articles on the best techniques and methods for energy savings that are relevant for the Chemical industry. The “Best Practice” section aims to summarise this considerable amount of information by providing visitors with a short description of 20 selected BPs with corresponding links to available related documents.

SPiCE3 Project meeting in Prague (22-23/10/2014)

Members of the Project’s Consortium have had an opportunity for a new and fruitful exchange of views on the general development of the Project and to discuss its current progress and future planning to deliver its ambitious objectives. The 2 main topics were the comments from EASME on the Interim Report and the Project’s Platform.

European Responsible Care Awards: 2014 Edition's Winners Unveiled

Responsible Care Award Winners
PARIS, October 17, 2014 - The 10th anniversary edition of the European Responsible Care Awards has rewarded the originality and outstanding problem-solving products and processes of three European companies during a special ceremony at the Cefic annual general assembly in Paris.

The 2014 Responsible Care Awards Judges panel awarded to the following projects for the quality of their work and their willingness to share their best practice:

· Energy Efficiency Award: Emerald Kalama Chemical BV (NL) - Project: “Greener Steam”
· Product Stewardship Award: Latexfalt BV (NL) - Project: “Increasing motorway lifetime”
· Environment Award: Solvay SA (BE) - Project: “Saving water through symbiosis”

CARE+ materials available in multiple languages

The suite of CARE+ resources that have been well-received in the chemical industry have now been compiled together in a fresh format and in multiple languages. The tools are currently available in Bulgarian, English, Finnish, German, Italian and Polish and work is on-going to translate the associated web pages into local languages.

Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) launches in the UK

Article 8 of the Energy Efficiency Directive requires the introduction of regular energy efficiency audits for ‘large enterprises’. In the UK, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have implemented this requirement under a dedicated programme called the ‘Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme” (ESOS). On 26th June 2014, the ESOS regulations were laid before parliament.
