Development and smart meters
17 Jun 2015

Gr1

Smart meters are the latest digital technology for measuring consumption of electricity and natural gas in real time. Concrete counters measure the total energy consumption as conventional counters, except that they can directly inform users as to when the energy consumed and the cost of that particular time. They also have the ability to communicate the data to both consumers (eg technology In Home Display (IHD) or mobile phone application) as well as energy suppliers.

Decarbonisation of the UK Chemical Industry
16 Jun 2015

A 'Decarbonisation and Energy Efficiency Roadmap' has recently been published by the UK Government. The aims are to improve understanding of the emissions-abatement potential of the sector, the relative costs of alternative abatement options and the related business environment including investment decisions, barriers and issues of competitiveness and establish a shared evidence base to inform future policy, and identify strategic conclusions and potential next steps to help deliver cost-effective decarbonisation in the medium to long term (over the period from 2020 to 2050).

30th June is the official last day of the SPiCE³ project. And what a ride the last 27 months have been! Now, at the end of the project, we have an opportunity to look back and summarise a little of what has been achieved.

It was back in April 2013 that the SPiCE³ project was set up by the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) together with its project partners to deliver added-value support to the European chemical sector in making companies aware of the importance of energy efficiency and in providing tools which help in the implementation of energy saving actions.

Extracting Energy From Production Residues
20 Mar 2015

There is growing retail pressure on manufacturers to find more sustainable processes and reduce their environmental impact. Although there will always be a carbon cost associated with production of Chemical and pharmaceutical, sustainability can be improved across the supply chain. Now, other industry sectors have the opportunity to follow the lead being set by the food industry. Nestlé, the leading European food, beverage and confectionery manufacturer is showing the way by converting its production residues into energy on its Fawdon confectionery production site, near Newcastle.

Funding is Key to Achieving Energy Efficiency Gains – report concludes
20 Mar 2015

An article published in our January 2015 newsletter took a look at the falling oil prices and possible impacts on energy efficiency. Since then, a recent EU report released in March concludes that energy efficiency should be viewed as "the first fuel". "It is competitive, cost effective to produce, widely available and delivers multiple benefits to project hosts and national economies", the report says. However, in order to spur investments, smart financial instruments are needed, and have to be tailored by sector to encourage reduction of energy use.
