What does the Review of the Energy Efficiency Directive mean for the European Chemical Industry?
04 Feb 2016

sunset_over_petrochemical_plant.jpg

On 25 October 2012, the European Union adopted the latest iteration of the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), a set of binding measures to help the EU reach its 20% energy efficiency target by 2020. Under the Directive, all EU countries are required to use energy more efficiently at all stages of the energy chain from its production to its final consumption. Unfortunately, as of the beginning of 2016, only 4 Member States had fully implemented the current one.

In 2016 the European Commission is working to revise the EED, this time building a pathway for Europe to reach the 27% target of energy efficiency by 2030. To aid this, a consultation was launched last November inviting interested stakeholders to feedback their ideas. Cefic (the European Chemical Industry Council), participated in the public consultation which ended 29 January, responding on behalf of its members and sharing with the European Commission the parameters to assist, rather than hinder our industry becoming even more energy efficient.

Energy Intensive Industry Urged to Seek EU Funding
02 Feb 2016

Following on from the DECC / BIS Decarbonisation reports published last March, a number of sub-groups have been established to see how the recommendations can be achieved. At a recent meeting between Government and Trade Associations it was revealed that the UK Energy Intensive sector does not have a good track record of attracting EU funding for energy efficiency projects. More work will be done to establish how Government can help industry access these funds and trade associations were asked to bring key funding sources to the attention of members.

Great news for SPiCE³ visitors
12 Jan 2016

spice3_energy_efficiency.jpg

Over the past two and a half years, SPiCE³ has provided hands-on support to both small and large European chemical companies with the simple aim to help them reduce their energy bills and make them more competitive.

Phase 1 of the project, which was co-financed under the EU's Intelligent Energy Europe Programme and started in April 2013, formally ended in June 2015. Considering the positive reception of the project and the tangible successes achieved, the SPiCE³ partners have committed themselves to work together to deliver a further 2 years' support to industry. This has been made possible thanks to financial support granted by Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, which announced 13 January a fresh investment round to support SPiCE³.

Energy Efficiency/SPiCE3 category

Trinseo Benelux (NL) received a special commendation for its project “Energy Efficiency through steam re-compression”.

trinseo

The company was praised for the creative way to use steam previously blown off to the atmosphere or condensed against cooling water. The steam re-compression plan at the unit has improved both energy and extraction efficiencies. Its simple design (with no rotating parts) and ease of operation provides a novel technique that Trinseo believes can have applications in other integrated sites struggling to make their site energy grids more efficient.
