Understanding the New CHP Act in Germany
19 Sep 2016

chp_plant_main.jpg

Combined Heat and Power (CHP), or cogeneration, is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat in one single, highly efficient process. On the first day of 2016 the new German law on cogeneration (KWKG 2016) became effective, introducing a series of changes in the regulatory framework for the promotion of highly-efficient CHP plants in Germany:

  • New plants fuelled by coal are not promoted
  • The development of district heating, heat and cold storage is fostered
  • The new law provides financial support to existing installations and new systems
  • The maximum annual funding is increased from €750 million to €1.5 billion
  • The CHP expansion target is reduced to 110 TWh per year by 2020 and to 120 TWh per year by 2025 (instead of the previously set 150 TWh target)
  • Electricity from cogeneration is entitled to the payment of a surcharge only if it is fed into a public supply grid

Green bonds: an opportunity for energy efficiency
19 Sep 2016

green_bonds_main.jpg

The global green bond market has been growing steadily since 2010, hitting $42.9 billion in 2015, according to the World Bank. This growth trend is very positive if we consider that the total amount issued in 2010 was merely a tenth of this figure. In view of this, one could conclude that we find ourselves in the middle of a boom in this market, however, green bonds are still an emerging financial instrument in Europe. The potential is there, but there is still lack of awareness and understanding on the side of both investors and potential (private and public) issuers.

Parliamentary Advisory Group on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) call for investment
19 Sep 2016

The report to the Secretary of State for Business Energy and Industrial  Strategy states that carbon capture and storage is an essential component in delivering lowest cost decarbonisation across the whole UK economy. It also concludes that  current CCS technology and its supply chain are fit for purpose. There is no reason to wait for international projects or for technological progress in either the components or overall system of CCS. Because lead times are long – planning, regulatory and construction – early decisions are needed.
