EPOS Cross-Sectorial Project on the Humber Bank
18 Sep 2017

As part of the Horizon 2020 funded project, EPOS (Efficiency and Performance in process industry Operations via onsite and cross-sectoral Symbiosis) three companies from the Humber Bank in the UK have got together to collectively improve energy efficiency and reduce waste from their processes. EPOS has developed a game changing management tool to bring businesses together from different sectors, providing a wide range of technological and organisational ideas to make industry more efficient, competitive and sustainable. Behind this is a series of ‘blueprints’ for the chemicals, cement and minerals sectors which maps out energy and material flows, making it easy to identify cross-sectorial commercial opportunities.

The opportunities identified in the Humber Bank project include using a waste organic liquid stream from the INEOS plant in Hull, recovering acetic acid for reuse and transporting the residue to CEMEX for use as a fuel in cement manufacture, reducing the need for primary fuel. The project also identified an opportunity for chalk reject material from OMYA to be used by CEMEX as a substitute for conventional limestone and in return provide cement kiln dust to OMYA for reclamation activities in quarry operations. This is an excellent demonstration of the carbon and cost savings which can be achieved by industrial symbiosis in a cluster. More information on the project can be found at
