An untapped energy efficiency potential: results from our survey
19 Sep 2017

In our last newsletter, we observed that - despite the acknowledgement that energy efficiency was an important concern - there were only few companies with a reference person or energy manager to whom relaying these questions. Belgium Chemical Industry: Efficient use of energy as part of sector’s DNA
19 Sep 2017

530386438

Improved energy efficiency throughout the sector led to a clear decoupling between production and energy use. Since 1990, total production* of Belgium’s chemical and life sciences industry has tripled. In the same period, energy consumption increased by only 37%.

The continuous focus on energy efficiency was strengthened by the voluntary commitments of the sector (accords de branche, covenant energy benchmarking, covenant energy auditing). Those agreements cover about 90% of the energy use in the sector. A large number of enterprises of the target group has also joined the new generation of voluntary agreements.

Key regulatory changes to the Energy Efficiency system in Poland
19 Sep 2017

90510652

The white certificate system, together with Energy Efficiency Obligation (EE0 scheme), were introduced in Poland in 2013.

Only a small number of white certificates were issued during the 2013-2016 biddings. This was caused by various regulatory flaws, e.g. unclear rules and definitions, lengthy procedures or draconian sanctions. Thus, the majority of obligated parties preferred the cheapest and safest solution of paying the substitution fee.

Committee on Climate Change - 2017 report to Parliament on reducing emissions and preparing for climate change

On 29 June the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) made its ninth annual report to the UK Parliament on reducing emissions and preparing for climate change. The report highlights that there is a policy gap that needs to be closed if the UK is to meet its carbon budgets up to 2030. More action is needed to decarbonise heat and transport. The government is to respond with a Clean Growth Plan this September. It is anticipated that associated measures will offer opportunities for industry to improve its energy efficiency and decarbonise while remaining competitive.
