Summary: The VCI is the association of the German chemical industry, based in Frankfurt am Main. Learn more about our partner in Germany.

vciFounded in 1877, the association today has more than 1,600 member companies, thus more than 90 percent of the turnover of German chemical manufacturers are represented in the VCI. With 27 regional and sector associations, the VCI is one of the four largest industry organizations in Germany.

In 2011 the German chemical industry employed over 427,000 staff. Chemical products worth 151 billion euros were exported in 2011. The total turnover in 2011 added up to more than 184 billion euros. Research in 2011 was funded with around 8.8 billion euros, and 6.4 billion euros were invested in tangible assets in Germany.

Since October 2012, Karl-Ludwig Kley (Chairman of the Executive Board of Merck KGaA) is president of the VCI; the director general is Utz Tillmann.

As an innovation driver for business and society, the chemical industry plays its part in helping a growing world population to achieve a better quality of life. To reach this aim, the VCI created several initiatives. One of the most important these days is our sustainability guideline for the chemical industry: Chemie³. The initiative takes our commitment even further. This sense of commitment – which is shared by companies, employees, social partners and other trade associations – reflects the fact that sustainability requires an all-encompassing approach which unites economic, environmental and social aspects. Therefore, the initiative is pooling the capabilities, experience and knowledge of a strong alliance comprising VCI, IG BCE (Mining, Chemical and Energy Industrial Union) and BAVC (German Federation of Chemical Employers' Associations) to enable people around the globe to utilize the potential that chemistry offers for sustainable development.

To develop sustainability on several levels, the VCI is delighted to join the Cefic project SPiCE³ and help SMEs to improve their energy efficiency.
