haci-greeceSince June 1994, the Hellenic Association of Chemical Industries is a full member of Cefic - the European Chemical Industry Council.

HACI has a direct membership of 94 members: 88 Greek enterprises, the majority of which are SMEs, and six sector-based associations - Hellenic Association of Industrial and Medical Gases, Hellenic Crop Protection Association, EPS Hellas, Hellenic Coatings Association, Association of Biofuel Producers, Association of Fertilizers Producers and Traders.

 

 

The scope of the association is the study and resolution of issues, which in general affect chemical industries in the following domains:

  • technical, industrial, financial, commercial, social and legal;
  • environmental protection;
  • hygiene and safety of employees;
  • quality assurance; and
  • statistical research and elaboration of statistical data.

The association cooperates with state-institutions, other scientific and professional organizations, European Union and international organizations. The association is a not-for-profit organization and does not deal with trade-business activities.

In order to fulfill its mandate, the HACI:

  • conducts research and studies;
  • collects statistics and other useful data from the chemical sector;
  • submits oral and written proposals to the public administration representing the chemical industry;
  • participates in internal committees and international fora, which address issues and develop positions influencing the chemical industry at national and European level;
  • brings forward data, publications of studies and viewpoints of the chemical industry;
  • communicates and co-operates with relevant associations;
  • supports the effort of state institutions in matters of environmental protection; and
  • promotes the principles of Responsible Care in the Greek chemical industry.

panosMr. Panos Scarlatos is a freelance consultant who has been serving HACI for more than 19 years as a member of its board, as president and currently he is its director general.

He has an MSc in Chemical Engineering from the National and technological University of Athens.
He has great experience in the chemical industry sector, including:

  • 27 years working experience in chemical industry sector (paints and varnishes, detergents) in many various positions of responsibility such as production manager, safety and environment manager, project manager, plant manager and technical director;
  • owning a business consultancy firm SUSTCHEM Engineering Ltd, whose activities are related to design and operation of industries;
  • being involved in the procedures of adaptation of many environmental EU directives and regulations and also studying their possible impacts on Greek enterprises;
  • working as a technical consultant of the Greek government and participated as a member of the Greek delegation in the 22nd UNEP Nairobi where it has been established a global administration policy of chemicals until 2020;
  • having an excellent knowledge of the EU chemicals legislation, as he has managed the project to assess the impacts of REACH regulation to Greek industry;
  • being the president of the administration board of the Educational and Scientific Centre of the Greek Chemical Engineers, where he promoted trainings for numerous chemical engineers and chemists in various subjects related to climate change, energy efficiency, environmental policy, waste management, dangerous goods transportation, chemicals legislation (REACH and CLP regulation);
  • being involved in many research and development projects (implementation and dissemination activities) related to waste management, chemical risk management, environmental environment policy and governance.

His main tasks in HACI are to:

  • serve as its director general;
  • represent HACI in Cefic;
  • operational support of HACI REACH Helpdesk;
  • set up vocational training programs for chemical industry professionals; and
  • organise workshops to inform and/or mobilise chemical industry in chemical risk management, waste management, environmental and safety legislation, and energy efficiency.

arisMr. Aris Gorogias is a freelance consultant who has worked for HACI on several projects for almost six years and is responsible for chemicals legislation, environmental policy, energy saving and efficiency in the industry sector.

He has an MSc in Chemical Engineering from the National and Technical University of Athens. Also, he has a postgraduate degree in Project Management from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

He has deep experience in the chemical industry sector, such as:

  • being a certified trainer for vocational training, specialized in chemical risk management, environmental legislation and feasibility studies for projects related to the use of renewable resources in energy sector;
  • being involved in more than 50 registrations and chemical safety assessments for different chemical substances, according to REACH Regulation 1907/2006, gaining great experience in production processes;
  • serving as a certified evaluator of investment projects on behalf of the Greek Ministry of Development, specialized in renewable resources, ICT projects and the chemical industries;
  • working with several ćhemical industries in order to improve their environmental performance, to reduce the consumption of natural recourses and to generally achieve sustainability;
  • being trained in energy saving in the industrial sector by the Scientific and Educational Centre of Chemical Engineering;
  • being involved in many research and development projects, namely implementation and dissemination activities, related to waste management, chemical risk management, environmental environment policy and governance and ICT, some of which has been founded by national and European Programs such as NSRF and Leonardo Da Vinci.

His main tasks in HACI are:

  • operational support for the HACI REACH Helpdesk that has been designed, implemented and operated on his own and the general manager's initiative;
  • setting up vocational training programmes for chemical industry professionals;
  • preparing proposals for the participation of HACI in European research programmes, such as FP7, Horizon 2020 and Leonardo Da Vinci;
  • organisation of workshops to inform and/or mobilise the chemical industry in chemical risk management, waste management, environmental and safety legislation, energy efficiency; and
  • representing the director general in consultations, exhibitions and workshops.
